Al Quran & Science Explain Original Shape of Earth

Shape of the Earth round or flat into a debate that seems still happening today. According to the Koran, the actual shape of the Earth which have been mentioned in the Qur'an Az-Zumar verse 5.

"He created the heavens and the earth (goal) is right; She put dinner on the day and shut the daytime over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running in a given time. Remember, He is the Mighty, the Forgiving," reads the Surah Az-Zumar verse 5.

Based on the consensus of scholars Ibn Taymiyyah, there was an agreement that scholars interpret this verse that the Earth is round.

"There is no dispute among the scholars that the sky was like a ball. Similarly, they agreed that this earth with all its movement both land and sea like a football," according to the consensus of scholars Ibn Taymiyah.Consensus is a method used by scholars to reach an agreement based on the Qur'an and Hadith in establishing a law or cases that occur.

Muslim scholars, Al Biruni asserted that the Earth is spherical. Mentioned that he had been instrumental wrote treatises on the planisphere and armillary sphere (globe).

Website infoastronomy reported, at the age of 17, Al Biruni calculate the latitude and longitude position of Kath, Khwarizm with high sun method. Al Biruni solve complex geodesic equation to calculate the radius of the Earth.

Muslim scientists also get a figure of about 6339.9 kilometers, was only 16.8 kilometers from the modern value is 6356.7 kilometers. While at the age of 22 years, Al Biruni has written several scientific papers, including about map projections, the use of 3D-Cartesian coordinate system and its transformation into polar coordinate system.

After reading a lot of data observations, Al Biruni believed that the Earth is round, rotates on its axis once a day and around the sun once a year. This is contrary to the general opinion at the time, but it is believed Al Biruni closest to the empirical data.
